From Communism to Krishna: A Daring Escape and Divine Quest!

A Rebel, A Healer, A Seeker of Truth!

Neellaxmi Mataji’s life is a whirlwind of courage, unwavering faith, and a breathtaking surrender to the divine! Born in the heart of communist Bulgaria, a land steeped in rigid ideologies and state-sanctioned Christianity, she felt a pull towards a different path, a thrilling journey into the depths of Bhakti Yoga.

While her peers dutifully attended church, she was captivated by the mysteries of yoga and self-realization, a daring pursuit of profound spiritual truths. Little did she know, this quest would catapult her into a life of extraordinary devotion, perilous sacrifices, and heart-stopping challenges.

In a time when any belief outside government-approved Christianity was deemed illegal, Mataji fearlessly embraced Krishna Consciousness. She endured imprisonment, brutal beatings, and relentless police surveillance, yet her faith remained an unyielding flame.

Her life is a testament to the raw power of devotion and Krishna’s divine plan. She transformed from a dentist under communist rule to a fearless spiritual seeker in Vrindavan!

How does one maintain such unwavering faith in the face of such relentless persecution? How does one stand defiant against such overwhelming odds? This is her electrifying story!

A Daring Leap of Faith: Risking Everything for the Bhagavad Gita!

During the iron-fisted rule of communism in Bulgaria, possessing spiritual texts like the Bhagavad Gita was a crime punishable by imprisonment. Yet, Neellaxmi Mataji secretly guarded her Bhagavad Gita, her most prized possession.

She secretly read the Bhagavad Gita, risking government reprisal. With the police constantly monitoring devotees, Mataji knew the immense risk she was taking. In defiance, she chose to translate and spread Krishna’s teachings of love and devotion among the masses.

Things took a dramatic turn when the police arrived at her workplace, intent on arresting her. Faced with imminent capture, she made a split-second decision. Without hesitation, she grabbed the sacred text and flung it aside, then, with a heart pounding like a drum, she propelled herself out of the first-floor window!

To anyone else, this would have been a moment of agonizing pain and regret, but for Neellaxmi, it was a surge of pure joy!

“In my mind, I should have felt intense pain, but no. There was only one thing, and that bliss,” she recalls. The fall was not a disaster, but a divine hurdle set by Krishna, a test of her complete surrender.

As she was rushed to the hospital, her devotional spirit never faltered. Fellow devotees secretly visited her, bringing prasadam and words of encouragement.

Three Months of Isolation, Three Months of Intense Devotion!

Doctors declared she would be bedridden for three months, immobilized by 50-kilogram traction weights. A period of grueling physical and mental strain for most, it became a period of explosive spiritual growth for Neellaxmi Mataji!

Instead of dwelling on her physical discomfort, she plunged into the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha Manta and translating sacred texts from 8 am to 8 pm.

Her unwavering devotion captivated the hospital staff. Some saw her intense focus as madness, attempting to sedate her, mistaking her loud chanting for mental distress.

As time went on, other patients grew curious about her practice, silently wondering how they could ask her to pray over them.

She proclaims, “My faith only grew stronger with each verse I translated. Krishna was preparing me for something greater.”

A Journey of Faith: Sweden, Bulgaria, Vrindavan

The divine plan continued to unfold as, upon recovering, Neellaxmi Mataji was entrusted with a thrilling mission: to travel to Sweden and digitize the Bhagavad Gita. ‘The faith I had showed greater depths with every verse I translated,’ she explained. ‘If Krishna wants, I can do anything. If Krishna takes, I surrender everything to Him.’ Her successful mission led her back to a liberated Bulgaria, where she was eager to deepen her devotion.

However, a new trial awaited: a diagnosis of progressive blindness, deemed incurable. Seeking a cure, she journeyed to India, where she learned that Panchkarma treatment could only slow the progression. Though heartbroken, she accepted this as part of Krishna’s plan. Embracing her destiny, she found her spiritual sanctuary in Vrindavan, Lord Krishna’s sacred land.

Finding a Spiritual Haven in Vrindavan!

The moment she arrived, she felt an overwhelming sense of belonging.

“Here, I forget myself,” she explains. “The atmosphere is filled with devotion. The townspeople, even while sweeping the streets, sings the glories of Krishna.”

She embarked on book distribution, spreading Lord Krishna’s teachings to devotees and tourists alike.

Her Guru Maharaj, Subhag Swami Maharaj, gave her a life-altering instruction:

“Stay at the dwelling place of Radharani and distribute books in Vrindavan.” Mataji, a self-proclaimed bookworm, reveled in sharing her knowledge.

She had achieved her life’s purpose!

Faith and Meaning: A Reflection of Unstoppable Spirit!

Neellaxmi Mataji’s journey is not just about escaping oppression or overcoming obstacles; it’s about total surrender to Krishna’s will.

“Life in the material world is full of disappointments,” she says. “But Krishna, His name, His teachings—these are the only things in my life that provide happiness.”

Every challenge, she believes, is a stepping stone towards deeper faith, and God’s plan is always perfect.
